If there’s anything that this pandemic has completely taken away from us, it’s our sense of time. Most of us won’t be able to tell whether it’s Sunday or Thursday without checking a calendar. Half of us are sleeping in the morning and staying wide awake at night. We’re either alternating between searching for snacks in the fridge that we have long finished and watching the latest Netflix hit or longingly gazing outside, wondering when we’ll finally be allowed to go out.
And yes, a lot of us, at least those who are able to read this are in way better condition than others. We’re still healthy, and we have food and shelter. However, at the same time, it’s true that our daily routine has been a little messed up since the lockdown, and for some of us, even our mental health could deteriorate if it continues to go this way.
Some people are more compatible with this kind of lifestyle, but still, we’ve all had to change part of our lives forcefully. Combine that with the anxiety of never knowing when this will end, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed.
Even for people whose business is blooming around this time, especially dropshippers, knowing the trending products to sell doesn’t really help overcome all the uncertainties for the future. Unlike the regular 9 to 5 jobs, businesses are an all-consuming affair. Since it’s something run by you and dependent on your attention, you can never really clock out from the job. One second you’re trying to check if the ad service is going well and the next thing you know, it’s past 2 am, and you forgot all about dinner.
Entrepreneurs have this habit of placing more importance on the prosperity of the business than their mental or physical health. When we think of the constant stress we’re currently under all the time anyway these days; it might be a good idea to take a step back and make yourself a priority for once.
Just like everyone else, you will also start rediscovering how awfully relaxing it can be to just do mundane things. Take a walk if you want, as long as you can keep a distance from others. Simple exercises not only have the advantage of keeping you fit and lowering your stress level, but it also helps to take a breather from your work. Maybe the solution to that one problem that has been bothering you for days will finally come to when you’re away from the computer screen.
Ultimately, if walking or jogging isn’t your thing, then you can always search for other calming activities. Read a book, play video games, do anything that does not come under work for at least an hour every day.
We’re used to people. Whether it’s when we’re at work or jostling each other in public transport, we’re used to having people all around and having small or big interactions with them. This pandemic and the lockdown that has followed has severely cut down the supply of human interaction, though, and it’s quite normal to feel disconnected from everything else. And with it comes a strong sense of loneliness that’s hard to get rid of.
So now, more than ever, we need to re-establish our connections with others. As long as we have our phone and messaging apps, we can never be truly cut off from others. That way, you can even continue doing your work in silence while on a video call with each other, so you feel someone is with you.
For people living with their families, they might be in a better state of mind, but it’s still important to keep some connection with the outside world. So, a video call or a text asking how your friends are doing can do a whole lot of good.
At a time like this, where everything feels out of control, it can be beneficial to focus on the little things. Something like changing out of your pajamas into your work clothes can significantly increase your productivity. Figures, considering the brain automatically associates pajamas to sleep. So, dress up a little, have a fresh cup of tea, and, if possible, follow your morning routine to what you would usually do on a regular office day. All of these things can help you feel more grounded and in your element.
Some people might also be able to pass the time by taking up new hobbies.
Anything that keeps your mind off the scary reality outside can be a big help right now. Some people might feel better with music blasting in their ears. It can narrow down the world into your room and make you focus on your work alone.
Everyone needs some semblance of routine in their life. At the same time, the lockdown does give some of us a little breathing space and excuse to not always be at our very best. While, of course, you want to aim for productivity and decide which trending products to sell on Shopify that you will be listing on your website, it’s fine to slack off just a little bit.
Do what you have to do but allow yourself to do it in a more calm, relaxed manner.
